About PVC Film Aging Process and Precautions


PVC film aging is also named as film curing, which is the processed by heating or other means to make PVC film reaches a stable state through physical or chemical action. The purpose of aging process is to eliminate the residual stress inside the PVC film material, prevent subsequent deformation or shrinkage, and improve the dimensional stability and physical properties. PVC film aging also promote the uniform distribution of additives to extend the service life.

1.     The Purpose of PVC Film Aging

• Evenly disperse the plasticizer

 Make the added plasticizer (such as DOP, DBP, etc.) fully penetrate the PVC molecular chain to avoid local precipitation.

• Eliminate internal stress

Reduce the internal stress caused by stretching or cooling during the PVC calendaring production process to prevent subsequent deformation or shrinkage.

• Stabilize performance

Improve the weather resistance, temperature resistance and mechanical strength of the PVC film.

 

2.     PVC Film Aging Conditions

• Temperature

40~60℃ (low temperature curing) or 80~120℃ (high temperature curing, adjusted according to the formula).

• Time

Several hours to 48 hours, depending on the film thickness and additive type.  Higher plasticizer content of PVC film requires longer aging time.

• Environment

Well-ventilated drying room or constant temperature equipment, avoid PVC film direct exposure to sunlight.

 

3.     Common Problems and Solutions of PVC Film Aging

• High aging temperature or too much plasticizer contents will make PVC film surface sticky; it is necessary to adjust the formula or the lower the aging temperature.

• If the plasticizer or lubricant migrates to the PVC film surface, should check the curing uniformity or additive compatibility.

•Insufficient curing time or too fast cooling will lead to PVC film shrinkage and deformation. The curing time needs to be extended, and the temperature needs to be lowered slowly.
